Holy Metropolis of Nevrokop - Harmony between Conservatism and Modernity

18/07/2023

In this troubling spiritual atmosphere,

where Christian consciousness is deemed outdated and inadequate for contemporary progress, the buildings housing the administrative activities of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church, even the monastery abodes, are considered conservative and incompatible with the spirit of modern architecture. However, in major cities around the world, including Bulgaria, churches and their associated administrative buildings are hailed as some of the most beautiful structures - take, for example, St. Peter's Cathedral in the Vatican, which also houses the administration, or Milan Cathedral, Notre-Dame de Paris, or the vibrant colored facade of the cathedral in Moscow, the "St. Alexander Nevsky" Cathedral in Sofia, the "St. Ivan Rilski" Monastery, the radiant white "Sacre Coeur" basilica on Montmartre Hill in Paris, and many others. Inspired by the idea of transforming the Nevrokop Holy Metropolis into one of the most impressive among church buildings, promoting harmony not only between man and nature but also between church life and the life of contemporary society - bridging conservatism and modernity, we created a design that allows for this integration with the surroundings and turns the metropolitan building and the natural environment it is situated in into a unified, interconnected composition.

A true architectural gem from 2023

now adorns the ancient town of Nevrokop (present-day Gotse Delchev). Its white facade adds a special charm, with the incredible golden mosaic of the image of Our Savior - Jesus Christ the Good Shepherd - positioned above the entrance. The building stands in stark contrast to its surroundings. The architect's aim in cladding it with milky white marble is to dazzle the eyes of those gazing upon it, redirecting their gaze upwards to the image of Christ the Good Shepherd. Dressing such a building is a considerable responsibility, as it must outlive us and remain as impressive and captivating for future generations. Located in the heart of Gotse Delchev, where all paths converge - a place that welcomes and bids farewell to all residents and guests of the city.

According to historical records, these lands were home to an episcopal fortress dating back to the 11th century, proving that since ancient times, these lands have been blessed with an archpastoral presence and an Orthodox spirit. That is why it is our duty to continue the dignified presence of the magnificent metropolitan residence on these lands. Architect Vitanov achieves this task by choosing a material for the facade that resembles delicate lace, exuding purity, chastity, and love while remaining eternal, just like Orthodoxy. Working with stone and achieving the desired outcome is immensely gratifying, says Architect Vitanov, and when you turn it into lattice works, balustrades, ornaments, inscriptions - that's when you feel the supreme satisfaction in your work. On the pediment of the main facade stands a large stone cross, which shields us with its strength and salvific power from above, allowing us to live peacefully under His benevolent shadow. Above the main entrance of the Nevrokop Holy Metropolis perches a stone eagle, symbolizing the hierarch who disseminates the Gospel and, at the same time, with its stern gaze, observes those entering and leaving the city.

The facade project was entirely realized with the blessing of His Eminence the Nevrokop Metropolitan Serafim, who was a constant inspiration to the team, participating in every idea and detail of the embellishment of this majestic facade. The restoration of the building was initiated by the late Venerable Metropolitan Natanail, who rests in the courtyard of the Metropolis. Though no longer with us, we hope that he rejoices in the completion of the building and intercedes for us before God's throne.
